At
Arcoessence the subject of siting is an obvious and
crucial subject. For many years we have been puzzled observing the curious
and apparent random ways
that buildings are positioned. Far too often we have
visited existing buildings, and have said to the owner.... 'if only
the building had been turned 90 degrees (or similar) on the block you
would not be having your problems etc.' We also once consulted on a 200
acre property for a client whose parents were architects. At the time we
thought there would be a number of desirable potential locations on a
property of this size. After some time 'walking the land' we felt there was a
single spot that was most suitable, and it wasn't one we would have
guessed off a site plan prior to our visit. Some years after the residence
was completed we met with the Client, and they emphasized how pleased they were
with living in the chosen location.
The
selection of a location to maximise views, elevation, direction (compass), climate and landscape, etc...
are critical to the success of any
structure. But for us, our favoured item is the skill involved in how the
structure 'sits' into the location. In
other words, how well the building appears to belong to the site and
vice versa.
