Ancient cultures thought it very important to name most things, the belief was that this gave the item a life, or more importantly soul. In recent times people like the idea of a name as it reminds them of family, events in their life, or imbuing a place with personal meaning. Many also like the idea of passing down this name through generations etc. We have always encouraged clients to name their homes - properties (of course roads in urban work), and often contribute to this part of our work. The first question is always, how does one arrive at a name? There are a number of ways we suggest. In the case of Projects on this website, names have come from old maps, music, family, geographical features, favourite ideas, anagrams, and acronyms, for example 'Bidri' Park. The site for our new Studio had a wonderful old established garden, although somewhat neglected, and overgrown. There existed a great cross section of different kinds of flourishing unusual fauna. Particularly lizards, and dragonflies of all shape and colours. We had always liked dragons and dragonflies, realising that even prior to the purchase of our the Property we had amassed quite a collection of items representing these beautiful insects. This consisted of jewellery, clothing, prints, tablecloths, objects etc. Friends and acquaintances had also been giving us dragonfly prints of and/or cards. On a more personal level Dragonfly is said to represent wisdom, illusion and agility. We also particularly like the sound of the word and this magical use of the last few letters of the alphabet.
We pursue and promote similar processes with
the use of colour and numerology. |
